Studies of Photonuclear Neutron Emission during the Start-up Phase of the Alcator C Tokamak

چکیده
Alcator C operations commenced with discharge cleaning and tokamak operation using hydrogen filling gas. Prior to and during these experiments no deuterium gas was allowed into the device. The earliest operation resulted in dosimeter readings of a few Roentgen per shot in the vicinity of the limiter and a localized source of neutron emission of 9 up to 10 neutrons/shot. A strong correlation of the neutron emissions with hard X-ray emissions from the limiter and nonthermal features on the synchrotron emissions was observed during these discharges. Gamma energy spectroscopy of the activated limiter after removal from Alcator allowed identification of 16 radioisotopes which were consistent with photonuclear processes (y,n , y,p , y,a reactions) arising in the limiter. After seven months of hydrogen operation conditions were achieved that resulted in substantially less non-thermal activity. Typical neutron emission rates of equal to or less than 106 n/sec were observed, i.e., about four orders of magnitude less than the expected D-D thermonuclear neutron emission rates for the same type of discharges if D2 was used as the filling gas. These results confirm previous measurements performed on the Alcator A tokamak [1].

Tungsten Measurement on Alcator C-Mod and EBIT for Future Fusion Reactors
Tungsten will be an important element in nearly all future fusion reactors because of its presence in plasma facing components. This makes tungsten a good candidate for a diagnostic element for ion temperature and toroidal velocity measurement, and it makes understanding tungsten emissions important for tokamak power balance. The effect of tungsten on tokamak plasmas is investigated at the Alca...

A pellet enhanced performance (PEP) mode, showing significantly reduced core transport, is regularly obtained after the injection of deeply penetrating lithium pellets into Alcator C-Mod discharges. These transient modes, which typically persist about two energy confinement times, are characterized by a steep pressure gradient (p <; a/5) in the inner third of the plasma, indicating the presence...
متن کاملObservation of reversed shear Alfvén eigenmodes between sawtooth crashes in the Alcator C-Mod tokamak.
Groups of frequency chirping modes observed between sawtooth crashes in the Alcator C-Mod tokamak are interpreted as reversed shear Alfvén eigenmodes near the q=1 surface. These modes indicate that a reversed shear q profile is generated during the relaxation phase of the sawtooth cycle. Two important parameters, q_{min} and its radial position, are deduced from comparisons of measured density ...
متن کاملIdentification of Mercier Instabilities in Alcator C-mod Tokamak
During current ramp-up discharges, highly localized magnetohydrody-namic (MHD) fluctuations were observed on the electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostics of Alcator C-Mod tokamak [I. The electron temperature profile was hollow, while the density profile was weakly decreasing. Assuming that the equilibration time was short enough to quickly thermalize ions the pressure profile was also foun...
متن کاملThe Measurement of the Intrinsic Impurities of Molybdenum and Carbon in the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak Plasma using Low Resolution Spectroscopy
The intrinsic impurity content of molybdenum and carbon was measured in the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak using low resolution, multilayer mirror (MLM) spectroscopy (∆λ ~ 1-10 Å). Molybdenum was the dominant high-Z impurity and originated from the molybdenum armor tiles covering all of C-Mod's plasma facing surfaces (including the inner column, the poloidal divertor plates, and the ICRF limiter). Despi...
